Six steps, and none of them costs you anything. We have set them out in full because most directories do not, and because knowing the sequence is what stops anybody being hurried.
Not "I need a good lawyer" — "I need somebody who does maintenance matters in the Rohini family court". Indian practice is specialised by forum as much as by subject. If you cannot complete that sentence, our desk will do it with you on the phone at no charge, and our three-question test is the place to start.
Before anything else. The Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987 lists, in Section 12, the people the State will represent for nothing — and a woman or a child qualifies whatever she earns. In Delhi the general income limit is below ₹3 lakh a year, and ₹4 lakh for senior citizens and transgender persons. Helplines: 1516 in Delhi, 15100 nationally. If you qualify, use it — we would rather tell you that than take your money.

The request goes to that advocate. Our desk calls you first, to understand the facts and check that the matter really is in that practice area. This is the single most useful free thing we do: the commonest problem is a matter described as "property" that is actually a succession dispute, or described as "cheating" that is actually a civil recovery.
Take every document, including the ones that hurt you. Agree what is covered, what is extra, how expenses are accounted for and what happens if the matter settles early — the four lines that prevent a fee dispute. Then read what to take to the first meeting.

Why we are strict about this. Rule 36 binds advocates. The Bar Council has disciplinary jurisdiction over advocates and none at all over websites. So a directory that ranks, rates or sells position is transferring a professional risk onto the people it lists while keeping the benefit for itself. The labels are the ones the profession uses, and they are not self-explanatory. Picking the wrong one is the commonest reason a request reaches somebody who cannot help.

If two labels both seem to fit, the matter is probably in the one you like less. A "cheating" complaint that is really a contract dispute; a "property" matter that is really a succession dispute among siblings; a "consumer" complaint against a builder that is really an insolvency question because the builder is before the NCLT. In each case the second characterisation decides where it goes — and that is exactly what our desk checks on the call before putting you in touch with anybody.
One — you may not need an advocate at all. A great many of the matters that reach us need a document drafted, a notice sent or a registration done, and nothing more. Drafting is not advocacy. If that is what yours is, say so on the call and we will quote our own documentation work instead, at a price shown on the service page before you order.
Two — if you qualify for free legal aid, use it. The advocates on legal services panels are enrolled advocates and in many districts they are experienced ones. It costs nothing, and it exists for exactly this.
Three — the large paid marketplaces will show you more advocates than we will. They advertise heavily and we do not, so their directory is bigger. What they also do is charge for placement and order results by payment. We do neither. Whether that trade is right for you is your call, and we would rather you made it knowing its shape.
