Read this before you fill the form

Legal Space Services is a legal documentation and filing company — not a law firm, and not advocates. Under sections 29, 33 and 45 of the Advocates Act, 1961 only an advocate enrolled with a State Bar Council may practise law, and practising without enrolment is a criminal offence. So during this internship you will not:

  • Appear, plead or act before any court, tribunal or authority.
  • Sign, verify or settle any pleading, petition, affidavit or vakalatnama.
  • Give legal advice or a legal opinion to a client — in person, on a call, by email or on chat.
  • Hold a client consultation or advise on the merits, strategy or prospects of a matter.
  • Draft a final client document on their own; drafts and templates are reviewed and owned by a qualified person.
  • Negotiate with an opposite party or their lawyer on anyone's behalf.
  • Use the title "Advocate", "Lawyer", "Counsel" or "Attorney" anywhere.
  • Sign outgoing client correspondence or speak for the company.
  • Quote, take or share in any fee.
  • Carry client originals unsupervised, or hold client money.
  • Solicit work or clients for the company or for any advocate.
  • Keep, copy or take away any client document or data after the internship ends.

We publish this list rather than hide it. If an internship anywhere promises you court appearances or client advice before enrolment, that is the one to be careful of.

When and how Required

One to four weeks. Rule 25 of the Bar Council of India Rules of Legal Education, 2008 provides that an internship in any one year cannot run for more than four continuous weeks, so a longer block could count against you at your own university. We keep to it.

If you are open to an advocate, your application also goes to the Bar Council enrolled advocates in our directory. The first one to accept takes you on, and only then do they see your phone number and email. Nothing is charged, either way.
A court, an area or a city. Write “anywhere” if you do not mind — it widens where we can place you.
An honest answer helps us place you faster. Many chamber internships are unpaid or cover expenses only — saying so does not count against you.

Before you apply

Is there any fee for the internship or the certificate?
No. There is no application fee, no internship fee and no charge for the certificate. We do not sell internships and we do not sell certificates. If any website asks a law student to pay for either, that should worry you.
Who can apply?
Any law student who is 18 or older and currently enrolled in a recognised law programme in India — the five-year integrated course, the three-year LL.B., or an LL.M. Recent graduates awaiting enrolment may also apply. We ask for a letter or NOC from your college before the internship starts, because that is what keeps this a student internship rather than employment.
Why do you insist on 18 or older?
Two reasons, both legal. Under section 9 of the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 a person under 18 is a child, and processing their data needs verifiable parental consent. And under section 11 of the Indian Contract Act, 1872 an agreement with a minor is void, which would make the confidentiality undertaking unenforceable — and you will be handling client documents. We would rather be clear than clever about this.
How long is the internship?
One to four weeks. That is not us being stingy — Rule 25 of the Bar Council of India Rules of Legal Education, 2008 provides that an internship in any one year cannot be for a continuous period of more than four weeks, so a longer block could count against you at your own university.
Will this count towards my compulsory internship weeks?
It may, and that is your university's decision, not ours. Rule 25(a) lists companies among the permitted places to intern, as bodies "where law is practised either in action or in dispute resolution or in management", and we are a legal documentation and filing company. But the rule ends with "and other such bodies as the University shall stipulate", so please get your internship coordinator's approval before you start. Also note that every student must intern at least once with trial and appellate advocates — we cannot substitute for that, and we will not pretend otherwise.
Will I get to appear in court or draft pleadings?
No, and nobody lawfully can before enrolment. Under sections 29, 33 and 45 of the Advocates Act, 1961 only an enrolled advocate may practise, and practising without enrolment is a criminal offence. So no appearance, no signing or settling of pleadings, no advising a client, and no using the title "Advocate". What you will get is real work: research, checklists, verification, tracking, drafting templates, and seeing how a file actually moves through a registry.
Is there a stipend?
Whether a stipend is payable is settled with you on the call before you start, and it is stated in writing in your internship letter. This is a learning internship, not employment — no employer–employee relationship is created, and there is no wage, employee benefit or offer of a job at the end of it.
What does the certificate say?
Exactly what you did and for how long — the work types, the dates and the number of weeks — with a certificate number your college can verify with us. It states plainly that we are not a law firm and that you did not appear before any court or advise any client. We will not write that you "practised law" or "drafted pleadings", because that would be untrue and it would not survive a careful reader.
Do you sign the internship diary?
Yes. Rule 25(b) requires you to keep an internship diary evaluated by your guide. You fill it in your own panel as you go, print it at the end, and we sign it. It is the single most useful thing we can do for you, and it costs nothing.
Can I intern from home?
Yes for a good part of it — research, citation checking, proof-reading, translation and content work all travel well. Filing, registry and observation work obviously does not. Say which you prefer on the form and we will be honest about what is possible.
