What is this listing, exactly?It is a factual directory entry for an advocate, published at that advocate's own written request. A person with a legal problem searches the directory by the kind of matter, the court or the city, reads the particulars, and contacts the advocate they choose — directly. Legal Space Services is a documentation and filing company; it does not practise law, gives no legal advice, takes no instructions on an advocate's behalf and is not a party to the engagement. Nothing is charged to the advocate at any stage, and nothing is paid to the advocate either: Legal Space Services neither sets, quotes, collects nor receives any part of a professional fee, and takes no share of it. That is not a policy we can change later — Rule 2 of Section II, Chapter II, Part VI of the Bar Council of India Rules forbids an advocate from sharing remuneration with a non-advocate, so the system is built so that money never moves between us at all.

No ratings, no ranking

No stars, no review counts, no "best" or "top" lists, no success rates and no comparison between advocates. Results are listed alphabetically. That is a compliance decision, and we would rather lose the click than take the risk with your licence.

Your enrolment is verified

The enrolment number is checked against the State Bar Council record before anything goes up, and one enrolment number holds one live profile — so nobody can put up an entry in your name.

The client is yours

Whoever contacts you engages you directly. The advice, the appearance, the conduct of the matter, the fee and the result are entirely between you and that person.

From form to live entry

You fill the application

Name as enrolled, mobile number, enrolment number and State Bar Council, your State and district, the courts you appear before, and the kinds of matter you handle. Everything else — email, photograph, chamber address, Bar Association, qualifications, languages and a description of your practice — is optional, and the form goes through without it. It takes about eight minutes.

You get an Application Number at once

An LSS-ADV reference appears on screen the moment you submit. Keep it. With your mobile number it opens your application on the Track page any time — no login and no password.

We verify, and ask if something is missing

The enrolment number is checked against the State Bar Council record. If a document is needed — usually the Certificate of Enrolment — a query appears on your Track page and you reply and upload it right there. We call rather than reject silently.

The entry goes live and a login is issued

Your entry is published with the permitted particulars only, and a login is created and sent to you so you can keep your own details up to date. Ask us to take it down at any time and it comes down the same day, without our asking why.

The permitted list comes from the proviso to Rule 36 of the Bar Council of India Rules read with the Schedule approved by Council Resolution No. 50 of 2008. The Bar Council's own note warns that any input beyond those particulars is deemed a violation of Rule 36 — which is why the second half of this table exists and why we will not add to it on request.

Does being listed create any risk under the Bar Council Rules?The honest answer is that the position is unsettled and you should form your own view. Rule 36 bars an advocate from soliciting work or advertising, with a proviso permitting a website carrying the particulars in the Bar Council of India's 2008 Schedule. In P.N. Vignesh v. Bar Council of India (W.P. No. 31281 of 2019, decided 3 July 2024) the Madras High Court held that online portals which rate, rank or price advocates act as touts, and directed that offending content be removed; it also recorded that a directory may publish the Rule 36 particulars. Appeals are pending before the Supreme Court and no interim protection has been granted to the portals. Our response has been to stay on the safe side of that line deliberately: no rating, no ranking, no review, no fee, no paid placement, alphabetical order, publication only on your own written request, and removal the same day it is asked for. We would rather be stricter than the current ambiguity requires. You should still satisfy yourself independently — and these pages have not been settled by a practising advocate on your behalf.

What does it cost to be listed?

Nothing, and there is nothing to pay later either. There is no listing fee, no subscription, no commission, no referral payment and no charge to stay listed or to be removed. Equally, Legal Space Services pays you nothing and takes no share of any fee you earn. Who is eligible?

Any advocate enrolled with any State Bar Council in India, whose enrolment is valid and subsisting and who is not suspended, debarred or otherwise disqualified under the Advocates Act, 1961. You may practise anywhere in the country — all 36 States and Union Territories are covered, with every district and the courts and tribunals in each.

What appears on my entry, and what does not?

Only the particulars the Bar Council of India permits on an advocate's web presence, taken from the Schedule under Rule 36: your name, address, telephone number and email, enrolment number, date of enrolment, the State Bar Council you are enrolled with, Bar Association, professional and academic qualifications, and your areas of practice. What does not appear: any rating, any review, any testimonial, any ranking, any "best" or "top" wording, any success rate, any comparison with another advocate and any fee of yours.

Is this an advertisement? Does it put me at risk under Rule 36?

The entry is designed as a factual directory listing made at your own request, not an advertisement. It carries no solicitation language, no claim of quality and no client testimonial. That is the shape the Bar Council of India's own 2008 Schedule permits and the shape the Madras High Court described when it said a directory may publish the Rule 36 particulars. You should nonetheless satisfy yourself independently, and we take a profile down the same day it is asked for, without asking why.

Will you send me clients or guarantee work?

No, and nobody should promise you that. A visitor searches the directory, reads the factual particulars and contacts the advocate they choose. You are engaged by that person directly. Legal Space Services is not your agent, partner or employer, does not take instructions on your behalf and is not a party to your engagement.

How long does it take, and how do I follow it?

Usually one to three working days. You get an Application Number beginning LSS-ADV the moment the form is submitted. Put that number, or your enrolment number, with your mobile number into the Track page and you will see exactly where the application has reached, any query we have raised, and a box to reply and upload a document.

Can somebody else put up a profile in my name?

No. One enrolment number can hold only one live profile at a time. If an application already exists on your number, the form will not create a second one. And because we verify the enrolment number with the Bar Council record before anything is published, an entry cannot go up in your name without that check.

Can I change or remove my entry later?

Yes. Once approved you get a login of your own and can update your details whenever you like. You can also write or call and the entry is amended or taken down the same day. There is no contract, no notice period and no exit fee.

What is expected of me?

Only that the particulars you give are true, that you tell us within seven days if anything changes, that you run your own conflict check before accepting a matter, and that you do not describe yourself as an employee, partner or agent of Legal Space Services or use its name in your own advertising.
